Book Club: Cooperstown Casebook

For our first book club of the year we discussed The Cooperstown Casebook: Who’s in the Baseball Hall of Fame, Who Should Be In, and Who Should Pack Their Plaques, by Jay Jaffe. This book offers one of the most comprehensive and substantive overviews of Hall of Fame enshrinees and leading candidates, anchored in Jaffe‘s groundbreaking JAWS system. Readers won’t agree with all of his conclusions, but in recent years those who partake in Hall of Fame debates–and increasingly those who vote to elect new inductees–have found that reckoning with Jaffe‘s player-by-player case studies is an essential starting point for evaluating a player’s worthiness for Cooperstown.
